Obituary for Dr. Melanie Kalei Ahokovi (Arnold)

Dr. Melanie Kalei Arnold Ahokovi of Honolulu, age 44, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the Queen’s Medical Center from complications of pneumonia. Born in Hilo, raised in Pāhala, Kalei was a 1992 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama and 1996 graduate of Utah State University. Earning her doctorate, she was a practicing psychologist with the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center focusing on helping children. The 1992 Nissan Hall of Honor Female Athlete of the Year, she passed on her love of sports, especially basketball and volleyball, to her children and helped to coach others. Kalei is survived by her husband of 18 years, John Ahokovi, children Ayden, Ava and Averi, sisters Michelle “Nana” Arnold, Aileenmarie “Boo” Arnold and Melodyann Kanoe Arnold of Honolulu, parents Larry and Cathy Arnold of Kea’au, Hawaii Island, in laws Berta Jane (Kenneth) Younce of Hilo, Kalae (Cherisse) Keala of Kea`au, Kiki (Chasity) Keala of O`ahu, nieces and nephews. Celebration of Life Monday, January 21, 2019 at the Elks Club in Waikiki from 10am-3pm. Visitation from 10 am to 12 noon, service at noon, celebration to follow. Casual attire, lei welcome and wear her favorite color “’teal.”
